28 Mar What are the stages of asthma?
1. Intermittent Asthma
Characteristics:
- Symptoms occur fewer than two days a week.
- Nighttime flare-ups happen less than twice a month.
- No major impact on daily activities.
- Normal lung function between episodes.
Management:
Intermittent asthma is often managed with occasional use of a quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol) when symptoms arise.
2. Mild Persistent Asthma
Characteristics:
- Symptoms occur more than twice a week but not daily.
- Nighttime symptoms appear 3-4 times per month.
- Minor limitations in daily activities.
- Lung function remains near normal.
Management:
A low-dose inhaled corticosteroid may be prescribed for long-term control, along with a rescue inhaler for sudden symptoms.
3. Moderate Persistent Asthma
Characteristics:
- Daily symptoms occur.
- Nighttime awakenings happen more than once a week but not nightly.
- Moderate limitation of daily activities.
- Reduced lung function (60-80% of normal capacity).
Management:
Daily use of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting bronchodilators may be needed. Lifestyle changes and avoiding triggers are essential.
4. Severe Persistent Asthma
Characteristics:
- Symptoms occur throughout the day, every day.
- Frequent nighttime awakenings (often nightly).
- Extreme limitation in daily activities.
- Lung function is below 60% of normal.
Management:
High-dose corticosteroids, long-acting bronchodilators, and possibly biologic therapies may be required. Close monitoring by a healthcare provider is essential.
Recognizing Asthma Triggers and Flare-Ups
