In Vitro Fertilization, commonly known as IVF. IVF is a medical procedure used to help people with fertility issues have a baby. It involves combining an egg and sperm outside the body in a lab, and then transferring the fertilized egg (embryo) back into the uterus to hopefully result in a
pregnancy.
Why IVF is Required:
IVF may be needed for several reasons, including:
- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes: This makes it difficult for eggs to be fertilized or for an embryo to travel to the uterus.
- Male infertility: Issues like low sperm count or poor sperm mobility.
- Ovulation disorders: Problems with the release of eggs from the ovaries.
- Endometriosis: A condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus grows outside it.
- Unexplained infertility: When no clear cause of infertility is found after testing.
- Genetic disorders: To prevent passing on certain genetic conditions to the child.
The IVF Process:
- Stimulation: The ovaries are stimulated with medication to produce multiple eggs. Normally, a woman produces one egg per month, but IVF aims for multiple eggs to increase the chances of success.
- Egg Retrieval: Once the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure is performed to collect them from the ovaries.
- Fertilization: The collected eggs are mixed with sperm in a lab to allow fertilization. Sometimes, a single sperm is injected directly into an egg (a process called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection or ICSI) if there are issues with sperm quality.
- Embryo Culture: The fertilized eggs (embryos) are cultured in the lab for a few days to monitor their development.
- Embryo Transfer: One or more healthy embryos are selected and transferred into the woman’s uterus. This is usually done a few days after fertilization.
- Pregnancy Test: About 14 days after the embryo transfer, a blood test is done to check if the procedure was successful and if pregnancy has been achieved.
IVF is a common fertility treatment but not necessarily the last resort. It’s one of many options available to help couples
